Amazing Natural Wine in Jura

We are so proud to be able to present the natural wines we offer, next to these amazing coffees and teas. The parallels of the growing and farming, as well as the care required to create a great drink is a result of managing so many natural variables. In this blog we’ll talk about wine types, winemaking styles, winemakers, drinking wine, drinking wine with coffee, drinking wine with food, and flexing our muscles while drinking wine on the beach.

The First producer we want to feature is Philippe Bornard. Philippe is a mainstay of Jura and the Appelation of Arbois. He used to sell his grapes to other winemakers, but was convinced by legendary Jura winemaker Pierre Overnoy to begin his own winery.

From our experience, Philippe’s wines are both emblematic of Jura with fresh oxidative qualities, however his style also reflects the Patience of France and other old world wines. His Chardonnay was super fresh. It has the vanilla body that one expects of a great chardonnay, but the floral notes of Jasmine and Lavender give way to more muted fruit as the wine opens up and gets closer to room temperature. Most of his wines are grown on limestone and clay, leading to that mix of minerality and body that is emblematic of the Jura region.

The other reason we are excited by these wines, is that these are some of the last wines from Philippe. In the recent years, his son Tony has begun to take over the operations of the winery and will continue on Bornard wines. Tony is already an accomplished winemaker in his own right, and we are excited to see what he does with the grapes of the land.
